Tasting Notes
Your first pour reveals an attractive golden amber color from at least 7 years of aging in small white oak whiskey barrels. The aroma is very pleasing to the nose soliciting comparisons to floral sweets, vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar.  Initial taste is true to the aromas. A medium body slightly complex for its age leads to a pleasantly warm and long finish leaving your desiring another taste.

Anecdotes
Rums produced by Varela Hermanos are blends of aged rums, the minimum number of years of aging is what is decalred on the label.  The Rum Gallery first tried Ron Abuelo 7 Años Reserva Superior while sailing along the Caribbean coast of Panama through the San Blas Islands (Kuna Yala) in 2004.  It's smooth flavor and appealing aromatics were a real eye-opener into the quality of Panamanian rums.  Then, I sampled it again at Edward Hamilton’s Ministry of Rum Tasting competition in New Orleans in 2008, where it won a gold medal in the competition. Packaging and presentation is handsome; the substantial brown glass bottle is embossed with the seal of Varela Hermanos on the shoulder and the label is rendered in pachment-like paper.

Opinion
Several distiguished distillers and knowledgable rum bar owners think that Abuelo 7 is Varela Hermanos' best rum due to its greater flavor and aroma — characteristics that they feel are aged out of the 12 year old.  Whether or not you share their opinion, you'll have to agree that Abuelo 7 Años is an incredible bargain. I’ve even heard of it selling in Panama for a dollar or two less than the price I paid. It’s a very satisfying rum, whether you buy it in Central America or here in the States. This seven year old rum from Ron Abuelo would make a nice “house rum.” fine for sipping neat or on the rocks, and for those who prefer to mixed, it would add nice complex rum flavors to a cocktail like a Fidel Castro, Mojito, or Cuban Sidecar.
