Tasting Notes
Barcelo 30 exhibits the dark brown color and red highlights you see in seasoned Brazilian Cherry.  In your tasting glass, a chorus line of legs, thick and multiplying, put on an act like they’ll never disappear, telling you there’s more than ethanol and water on display here. Look closely in fair light to see a faint green hue where surface rum meets glass, offering further proof of prolonged aging in oak.

A bouquet of caramel perfume emerges immediately after pulling the wide cork as if signaling “savor me”.  Instantly complex, the aromas speak to you in a language only wood lovers fully comprehend.  There are deep sugary oak roasts, coffee beans, sweet fresh tobacco and young leather, caramel, spicy scents of fresh whole vanilla pod, nutmeg, hints of cardamom and turmeric, and finally mango and mild orange peel to balance the nose.  Add three drops of water and a softer rum develops – the aromas more subtle and blended, with caramel the frontmost.  Exactly twenty-eight minutes after stealing my fist sniff of Barcelo 30, patience succumbs to selfish anticipation, and I sip.  Yes, it’s all that.  Heavenly heavyweight body.  Sweet caramel up front.  All those marvelous flavors, consistent with the aromas,  reveal themselves in perfect progression; the most delicate coming last, lingering throughout the delicately oaky-sweet honey-toffee finish.  Extremely Smooth.

Barcelo 30 was released in 2011 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of creating Barcelo Imperial, an incredibly complex and delicious rum in it’s own right.  Barcelo 30 is aged first in American white oak barrels, the it undergoes a second maturation in Chateau d'Yquem bordeaux barrels.

Barcelo 30 Circle-OK

Not only does the rum stand above others in aromas and flavors, the packaging too, elevates Barcelo 30 to new heights.  A blond hardwood pedestal sports sculpted metal side braces that key into recesses in the compound curve bottle, proudly setting Barcelo 30 apart from lessor rums in your collection.  That is, if you dare to display it out of the elliptically shaped, protective-yet-ornamental sealed metal container.

Now I must express my sincere thanks to Pavol (Pablo) Kazimir, friend, fellow RumXP judge and Slovakian ex-pat who followed his heart to the Dominican Republic. There, he is currently distinguishing himself at Pat’e Palo European Brasseries and bar in Santo Domingo, having earned the title “Best Bartender in the DR” during Diageo's Reserve World 2012 search for the world's best bartender.  He also gifted this Barcelo 30 to me so I could share it with visitors to the Rum Gallery.  Hola, Pablo:  Muchas gracias, mi amigo.

Barcelo 30 is simply, one of the best rums in the world.  I believe perfection is a quality achievable by humans. Barcelo 30 reaffirms my conviction.  Honestly, my only trepidation about this rum is whether my review lives up to it.

Frequent viewers of The Rum Gallery know thatI’m a huge fan of Bareclo Imperial rum.  My like for it has been redeemed repeatedly over many years at blind rum tastings all over the USA, where I unknowingly rate it among the top tier of rums being judged.  Barcelo 30 is a level or two up from there.

Just smelling Barcelo 30 brings to me visions of a dimly lit, stone walled, humid rum aging bodega where walls of massive oak barrels treat the angels to their pleasure more frequently than us mere mortals get to enjoy.  Acquire for yourself a bottle of Barcelo 30 and see what the heavens are so excited about.
