Tasting Notes
Very Smooth. Barceló Gran Añejo rum shows the same beauty in your glass as in its new bottle. An attractive mild copper color is your first clue that Barcelo Gran Añejo is out of the ordinary.  The aromas are superior to what we normally expect at this price:  very smooth, refined alcohol delivering a vegetal cane sweetness over heady caramel, oak, vanilla, tropical spice and tangerine peel, then new leather and mild fresh dry tobacco, with a hint of coconut.  The initial taste builds from there, with additional sweet honey, fresh leather, vanilla and a bit of white pepper.  In a word; Sugarcane.  A medium-heavy body transitions well into a moderately long and sweet finish with some lingering caramel.

Barcelo updated their Gran Añejo in 2010 with a product that I believe is superior to the previous version I first tasted while on vacation in the Dominican Republic in early 2008.  As a result of aging for an additional two years in used oak bourbon barrels (for up to six years now), the current iteration of Gran Añejo has an improved taste and greater complexity.  The packaging also has been updated too.  A more modern, sharper edged bottle replaces the traditional squat, rounded container and does the rum justice.  Above the clear label sits a proud lion crest embossed in the glass, while the Ron Dominicano declaration lies below.  A black foil seal concealing the screw cap with pour limiter tops it off.

Please Barcelo, open up more distribution channels for your Gran Añejo.  It is all that a daily rum should be:  tasteful, with nice aromas and new dimensions added as you progress from sniff to taste to finish.  At such an affordable price, Barcelo Gran Añejo is a rum you look forward to enjoying each day.
