Tasting Notes
Extremely Smooth.  Berry’s Guadeloupe 12 year old rhum shows a dark amber color and legs that form quick and thick, run long, then leave a crown of rum beads at the top of the swirl’s reach.

A mild perfume bouquet of sweet grassy sugarcane characteristic of rhums agricole is followed by delicate vanilla and deeper oak aromas, heavy pie crust with mild spice (cinnamon and nutmeg), then oily aromas like walnuts, paraffin and candied fruit.

Initial tasting reveals a medium-heavy body delivering well integrated flavors that mirror the aromas, with the spice notes more pronounced while adding mild anise and white pepper that ride through the medium-length slightly sweet finish.

Anecdotes
Guadeloupe 12 year is distilled at the Bellevue Distillery on the island of Marie Galante in the French West Indies.  The style of agricole rhum is unique to the island.  Not being subject to the AOC regulations that constrain Martinique’s rhums agricole allows Bellevue to produce rhums that are less grassy, less vegetal tasting and perhaps more approachable for people who have not yet acquired the taste for agricole rhum.

Opinion
Berry’s Guadeloupe 12 year old shows a lot of wood, while the distinct agricole notes you experience in Martinque’s AOC rhums agricole vieux have been softened with age.  This is an approachable – if expensive – introduction to the unique French style of aged rhums, both for aficionados of molasses-based industrielle rum and drinkers of heavier distilled brown spirits.
