Tasting Notes
Extremely Smooth.  Pour an ounce of Berry’s Panama 10 year old rum into your tasting glass, and pause to enjoy the caramel and oaken vanilla bouquet.  The rum shows a bright copper hue, then clings to the sides of your glass after swirling, hinting at a heavy bodied rum.  Sniff deeper to discover aromas of heavy pastry (flour+butter+lard), well balanced by the slightly hotter alcohol (46%) than we’re used to from Panama.  Oh, the s’mores, light milk chocolate, phenolic, mild paraffin, nutmeg, overripe banana, mango and baked apples: every scent pleases the nose.  A sip of this heavenly full bodied rum rewards with the flavors of caramel-filled milk chocolate and vanilla laying thickly on your palate, fading slowly to a long, consistently sweet finish.

Berry’s Panama 10 year old rum is distilled at the Varela Hermanos distillery in Pese, Panama.  Varela is well known internationally for the fine line of premium aged rums within the Abuelo brand, and for their Seco aguardiente unaged white sugarcane spirit.  The distillery is Panama’s oldest, operates several tall column stills to distill rum from fermented molasses.

Rum Gallery visited the Varela Hermanos distillery in April 2011 and watched the entire facility thriving with rum production.  From fresh-cut sugarcane and molasses being delivered by oxcart and truck, to crushing the cane, fermenting, fueling the boilers with spent bagasse, distilling and capturing the hot alcohol vapors, to stumbling through huge aging bodegfas with oak  barrels stacked to the rafters, the operation was impressive at every stage.  I can only imagine the fun Berry’s rum scouts had deciding which barrels to bottle.

Berry’s Panama 10 Year Old tastes exactly like what we’ve come to love about  Varela Hermanos: clean, column-distilled molasses-based rums that are expertly aged in oak for years until perfectly mellowed and matured.
