Tasting Notes
Flor de Caña 25 shows deep, dark reddish amber color in the bottle and tasting glass, reminiscent of patine’d copper – only the rum is polished and shines.  Swirling produces a thick smear of rum inside my tasting glass, then many legs for and drip at a moderate pace.  Flor de Caña 25 makes for a visually appealing rum.

Pulling the natural cork stopper allows a bouquet of rich caramel to breathe its hypnotic influence over my attempt to objectively evaluate this rum.  It’s a sweetie for sure.  Sniffing more deeply evokes deeper aromas of caramel, tightly integrated with wood vanillans, oak and dark cocoa with a hint of orange and tropical fruit as a balance.  No one aromas shouts its presence above the others, perhaps indicating a rum that has had ample time to marry in the blending barrel.  The initial taste reveals more pronounced fruit flavor over the solid oak medium-heavy bodied foundation, mild almond, milk chocolate and a caramel sweetness that languors into a long finish like toffee.

Anecdotes
Flor de Caña created impressive packaging for their top of the line  25 year old rum.  The black-and-gold label contrasts nicely with the reddish hue of the rum, and distinguishes this mature nectar apart from its younger 18 and 12 year old siblings. Featured on the label and gold bottle cap is an artist’s rendition of the Nicaraguan volcano. The bottle offers sharp, bevelled edges and a heavy solid-glass base in contast to the enticing liquid inside.  This same bottle wis bing migrated down into the portfolio, with Flor de Caña 18 year old the next in line.

Opinion
Flor de Caña's 25 year old is a delightful rum, truly a worthy step beyond the distiler’s former flagship products, the 18 year old and 21st Century Edition 15 year old.  The 25 year old has toned down some of the vanilla and resists the trend toward over sweetening that seem to plague too many otherwise fine rums from this prolific rum producing region. Flor de Caña 25 Year Old is a definitive expression of Central American rum.  This one’s been in the making for a quarter century, and it was worth the wait.
