Tasting Notes
Very Smooth.  La Mauny V.S.O.P. shows a rich, reddish brown amber color, suggesting a refined qualities to come.  Upon first sniff, you’ll notice the distinct agricole-style, as complex aromas unfold in layer after beautiful layer, revealing charcoal and fresh cut wood, new dry leather, light fresh tobacco, slightly sweet vanilla, autumn spices, pumpkin, brown sugar, dried fruit (orange, raisin, cranberry, black cherry), and finally a subtle organic cane scent.  So individual are its aromas that you could pick this rhum out in a blind sniffing contest.

The pleasing initial taste is thoroughly consistent with the aromas but more pronounced, with wood smoke, leather, tobacco, and carburized brown sugar.  Sipping elicits the entire range of scents and flavors you could imagine as if you’re walking through one of La Mauny’s aging rooms – truly a musty, woody, aromatic, heady, authentic rhum experience. A medium body spreads the rhum’s flavors over the tongue in perfect timing for your palate to discover them in proper order before the semi-sweet finish closes with licorice, then dries at very end.

Anecdotes
The history of La Mauny begins in 1749 with the arrival of Joseph Ferdinand Poulain, Comte de Mauny, in the West Indies, and founding of the the La Mauny estate.  La Mauny has become the largest distillery in Martinique. Rhum took over as the primary product in the 1800’s, as slavery and sugar production in the Caribbean, and especially the Frech West Indies declined rapidly.

Packaging is substantial yet conventional; a cannonshell-shaped clear bottle with a swollen neck allows the rhum’s deep color to shine through, topped of with a natural cork stopper under heavy gold foil.

Opinion
La Mauny VSOP is a classic Martinique heavy style rhum; copper pot distilled, highly aromatic, deeply flavored, delivering in acute balance all of the best elements we love agricoles for.  If you appreciate an aged, smoky rhum, save some money and look no further than La Mauny V.S.O.P.
