Tasting Notes
Extremely Smooth.  A beautiful deep reddish brown color like Brazilian cherrywood in the glass.  The aromas are heavily sweet, with caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, pecan and butterscotch, a slight hint of spice (mild clove and cinnamon), and an earthy essence like fine dried tobacco leaves.  Upon initial taste, the moderately complex flavors remain composed and whole – in other words, the rum doesn’t dissect itself into its separate flavor elements like some mature aged rums.  Instead, it presents an integrated flavor of complimentary deep natural sweets.  The substantial body makes it’s weight known from the first sip, as the rum starts at the tip of your tongue and sends ashore a wave of beautiful sweet caramel flavor before delivering a voluptuous finish that’s sweet with light milk chocolate, with lingering caramel and a bit of licorice, all well integrated and blended.

Anecdotes
Roughly translated using my feeble Spanish language skills, I understand the distillery’s history to be written as follows:  Ocumare’s humble beginnings date back to May 1, 1938, when they began producing rum in a house located in Caracas, Venezuela using an alambique pot still.  The founders controlled the operation with only four employees, working in small warehouses and offices.  In 1950, production was transferred to the Hacienda of Guadelupe in Ocumare de Tuy, where expanded warehouses and a modern still were established.  The same site today houses a modern, high-tech liquor producing complex, while master distiller and blender Andres Colmenares develops rums that retain the traditional qualities of the founders’ earliest spirits.

A two-tone brown and tan cylinder protects the clear glass bottle, which is embossed with a recessed “O.” iA red-gold label adorned with Ocumare’s salamander logo is centered in the O., A gold plastic cap with natural cork stopper wrapped in gold plastic foil seals the delicious rum inside.  Nothing special about the packaging here - you collect Ocumare Añejo Especial for the rum, not for any overdone exterior presentation.

Ocumare Añejo Especial shown here is known under various names in other regional markets.  It is called “R” in Venezuela, and Ocumare 12 in Europe.

Opinion
Sweeter than I expected from Ocumare, more so than many of the fine Venezuelan rums of lengthy aging, but entirely pleasant and light. Ocumare Añejo Especial compares very favorably with the sweeter/older Central American rums, and those Rum aficionados who are partial to them will also enjoy this South American treasure.  Ocumare has a winner that only needs broader distribution and market exposure to succeed – I look forward to those developments.
