Tasting Notes
Very Smooth.  A gorgeous golden brown color is the first clue to the quality of this rum.  Those who take time diligently explore with their nose before sipping will be rewarded with wonderfully complex aromas revealed in a cascade that begins deep and richly sweet with molasses, brown sugar and caramel, then raisin, walnuts, charred oak, apricot, and finally perhaps some nutmeg and mace.   The initial taste is classically warm, sweet with caramel and vanilla, with more oaken wood tones than the aromas alluded to. A medium-full bodied delivers reinforces the depth of flavors, ending in a sweet, medium-long finish with an enticing off-dry lingering close.

Ocumare Añejo tastes like a fine rum crafted in an old world style, with not even a hint of added cane juice that is so trendy in many new rums.  Instead, the aromas and flavors seem to simply leech into the spirit from the care taken during distillation and maturation.

As if to say they’d rather invest in the product than the packaging, the wise folks at Ocumare use a straightforward clear glass bottle similar in shape to a whiskey bottle (you can’t judge a book by its cover), with a screwcap.  That’s perfectly appropriate, as this rum is produced and priced to drink, not collect.

Don’t let the entry-level price tag dissuade you from buying; Ocumare delivers a sophisticated quality with flavors and complexity besting many rums up to three times its price.  Though it is difficult to find, it isn’t priced up there with other collectable spirits.  Ocumare’s quality makes it a rum you really should have on hand, as the Venezuelan bargain, outstanding at any price.
